‘This is Our Space’ – Currently exhibiting at the RBSA Gallery in Birmingham, UK

I had been searching for inspiration for my latest artwork, and I couldn’t help but be horrified by the invasion of Ukraine, that had literally just begun. I started off with a very rough sketch, at the centre of which I wanted the internationally recognised ‘peace sign’. Whilst I was working I happened to hear an amazing dance tune by renowned Ukrainian DJ, Artbat – called ‘Our Space’… I found it inspirational (unusual for me as I am not normally a dance music fan), and it became the ‘anthem’ for this painting, and was listened to repeatedly for the duration.

There is also a bit of a nod to ‘3rd of May 1808’ by Goya, in which he depicts a scene from the 19th century French invasion of Spain. A man stands, arms aloft, I believe, in sad defiance, in front of a firing squad from the invading forces.
